Crucial business skills for designers

Great question!

Understand core business metrics

I think it’s key to understand the core metrics that matter to the business—things like CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost), churn rate, conversions, revenue, and YoY/MoM growth.
It’s all about the numbers, but even just understanding the general concepts can help a lot.

Understand how business operates

You should also get a good grasp of how the business operates, like:
  • How they position themselves in the market
  • The entire funnel, from Awareness to Referral (check out the Growth Canvas if you haven’t already)
But honestly, the best way to learn is by starting your own micro-business. It doesn’t have to be huge—just something small where you can see firsthand what business owners actually care about.
