Common questions clients ask when hiring freelancers
- Do they have industry experience (i.e. consumer, B2B, fitness,…) so they can ramp up quickly and understand nuances?
- Has the designer shown he/she can do the job?
- Is his/her portfolio impressive?
- How would it be easy to work with this person?
- Are they open to feedback and flexible?
- Of course, the question of price too.
As long as you think about answering those questions, you’ll be fine.
Client vetting
Before you say ‘yes’ to a project, let’s talk about something crucial: not every client is worth your time.
Here’s how to vet them:
1. Start with a vibe check
- Ask about the budget upfront.
- Pay attention to the red fags—regardless of how small they are.
2. Set clear expectations from day 1
- Lay out what you’re delivering down to the last wireframe.
- Payment terms are not optional.
3. Understand their why
- Why do they need you?
- Do they respect your expertise?
