I’m just getting started in freelance UX and could really use any tips or tricks on how to land clients.

Common questions clients ask when hiring freelancers

  1. Do they have industry experience (i.e. consumer, B2B, fitness,…) so they can ramp up quickly and understand nuances?
  1. Has the designer shown he/she can do the job?
  1. Is his/her portfolio impressive?
  1. How would it be easy to work with this person?
  1. Are they open to feedback and flexible?
  1. Of course, the question of price too.

As long as you think about answering those questions, you’ll be fine.

Client vetting

Before you say ‘yes’ to a project, let’s talk about something crucial: not every client is worth your time.
Here’s how to vet them:

1. Start with a vibe check

  • Ask about the budget upfront.
  • Pay attention to the red fags—regardless of how small they are.

2. Set clear expectations from day 1

  • Lay out what you’re delivering down to the last wireframe.
  • Payment terms are not optional.

3. Understand their why

  • Why do they need you?
  • Do they respect your expertise?
