How I built design acumen in 2 different companies

One way to build design acumen is by launching UX Onboarding, which I did with two teams at different companies.
It started as a weekly, open-invite session with about 20 people—new hires and existing employees—and we gradually began inviting the whole org. By the end of the quarter, we'd run sessions for around 250 people.
New hires joined because they thought it was part of their orientation, and existing team members came because they heard about a new initiative.
It was a casual session where we covered:
  • What we do as UXers
  • Our process, tools, workflow, and who’s on the team
  • d.school’s design thinking wallet exercise
  • An open invite for folks to catch up with us if they needed help
The goal was to build a network of people who could refer to the design team.
💡 Pro tip: Everyone on the design team had to run these sessions to learn to speak to non-design stakeholders and explaining the value of our work.
