Advocating UX in non-design organisations

Great question—it's a big topic!
In short, it's an uphill battle, not for the faint of heart, but absolutely necessary.
Here’s what I’d suggest:

Build alliances

  • Find people across different teams who support your vision—product managers, devs, marketing, etc. The more allies, the better.
  • Connect with decision-makers. It’s key to get leadership on your side so design is considered when big decisions are made.

Educate and train

  • Help everyone understand why design matters. Run workshops, casual sessions, or just show how design fits into what they’re doing.
  • Keep supporting them after the training. Be available to help apply design thinking to their work and answer any questions that pop up.

Promote internally

  • Talk about the design process, not just the results. Share how design thinking solves problems and leads to better outcomes.
  • Don’t wait for people to find you—actively promote your work through emails, Slack updates, or internal newsletters to keep design top of mind.
