Memory UX
Synonyms: AI memory design, persistent memory, long-term memory UX, personalization memory, cross-chat memory
Definition
Use cases
- Context in the wrong task: X asked ChatGPT for an image of his dog in a pelican costume. It added a "Half Moon Bay" sign, his location from older chats.
- Deleted chat, kept memory: In ChatGPT, deleting a conversation doesn't delete the memories saved from it. Clearing a chat to remove something private leaves it stored.
How it's used in practice
- Show the save as it happens: Show a "Memory updated" note that links to the saved fact, so users can undo it.
- Make memory a readable list: Let users edit or delete single memories, and turn memory off in one place.
- Scope memory by context: Claude gives each project its own memory, so client details stay out of personal chats.
- Offer a private mode: Temporary chats in ChatGPT and Gemini don't save or use memory.
Challenges & limitations
- Hard to explain: In interviews with 18 users, many didn't fully understand how LLM memory works, so they skip its controls.
- Stale facts: Someone who changed jobs keeps getting answers based on the old one.
- Helpful or creepy: The same remembered detail feels useful in one chat and intrusive in another, and no fixed rule decides which.
