Ambient AI
Synonyms: ambient agents, background AI, ambient computing, calm AI, always-on assistant
Definition
Use cases
- The over-eager copilot: A sales assistant pops a tip on every call. Reps mute it by Friday.
- The silent mistake: An inbox agent archives a client's invoice overnight. Nobody finds out for 2 weeks, and there's no log to check.
- The surprise recording: A meeting assistant joins a call. One guest never knew it was listening.
How it's used in practice
- Sort every event into notify, ask, or review: Tell the user, ask for missing info, or get approval before acting.
- Match urgency to interruption level: Default to a digest. Interrupt only for things that matter within the hour.
- Batch updates: Send low-priority updates as one morning summary.
- Show presence: A small status cue (listening, working, idle) with one-tap pause.
- Keep an activity log with undo: Every background action, its reason, and a way back.
Challenges & limitations
- Bystander consent: The person who switched it on isn't the only one being recorded.
- Lab tests miss it: Behavior depends on days of real context, which a 1-hour usability session can't reproduce.
- Silence is ambiguous: No alerts can mean nothing happened, or that the agent stopped working.
