Cognitive Walkthrough
Synonyms: cognitive walkthrough evaluation, task-based usability inspection, learnability walkthrough, walkthrough evaluation
Definition
Use cases
- A fintech onboarding flow where a first-timer can't find how to link their bank account and quietly rage-quits.
- A shiny new feature hidden behind an icon nobody recognizes, so adoption flatlines a week after launch.
How it's used in practice
- Define your target user, pick 1–4 real tasks, and write out the exact action sequence for each.
- Gather 2–6 evaluators with a facilitator, a presenter driving the prototype, and a note-taker.
- At every step, ask the four questions: will they try the right action, notice it's available, connect it to their goal, and see the feedback?
- Log each failure against the step where it broke. No fixing or defending designs mid-session.
- Collect the reports, prioritize by severity, then send fixes to the backlog.
Challenges & limitations
- It only tests learnability. It won't tell you whether power users find the flow slow or whether anyone wanted the feature to begin with.
- Evaluators aren't your users, so they'll talk themselves into "obvious" steps a real newbie would fumble. Personas help but don't fully close the gap.
- Group sessions drift into redesign debates fast. A firm facilitator is the whole difference between real insight and a two-hour opinion swap.
