Definition

A case study is a structured narrative that documents a design project: the problem, your process, the decisions you made, and the outcome. In UX it's the core unit of a portfolio and the main thing hiring managers read to judge how you think.

Use cases

A weak case study costs you the interview. Hiring managers skim dozens of portfolios; if yours reads like a screenshot dump or a feature list, they move on before they reach your thinking.
  • The screenshot dump: Ten polished UI shots with no context. The reviewer can't tell what problem it solved or what you actually did, so it reads as decoration.
  • The NDA problem: You did great work at a big company, but it's locked. A case study lets you tell the process and reasoning story without leaking protected screens or data.
  • The stakeholder pitch: Beyond hiring, a case study documents a shipped project internally, showing leadership the impact so the next research budget gets approved.

How it's used in practice

  • Lead with the outcome: Open with the problem and the result. "Cut checkout drop-off 22%" earns attention before you walk through how.
  • Show the messy middle: Include the ideas you rejected and why. Reviewers want to see judgment under constraints, not a tidy straight line.
  • Name your actual role: Say what you did versus what the team did. A vague "we" makes hiring managers suspicious.
  • Make it skimmable: Clear hierarchy, white space, captions on every image. People scan before they read.
  • Quantify impact: Metrics, before-and-after, or a sharp user quote. Numbers make the story land.
🪄
Pro-tip: Two or three deep case studies are better than six shallow ones. Pick the work that proves the exact skills you want to be hired for, then go deep enough to show real range. Hiring managers remember one strong story, not a stack of thin write-ups.

Challenges & limitations

  • Confidentiality: A lot of strong work is under NDA. You have to abstract it or get sign-off, which limits what lands on the page.
  • Time cost: A good case study takes real hours to write and design. Most people underestimate it and ship something rushed.
  • Hindsight polish: It's tempting to rewrite history into a clean arc. Reviewers can smell a story that's too neat and never hit a wall.
