Definition

An expert review is an inspection where 1 or more UX experts examine a product or prototype for usability problems. Reviewers walk through key tasks from the user's point of view and assess the experience against usability principles or guidelines.
A heuristic evaluation is a structured form of expert review that uses a defined set of heuristics. Other expert reviews may use checklists or professional judgment.
Expert reviews can identify likely problems quickly without recruiting users. Usability testing can then check whether those problems affect real users.

Use cases

Expert reviews are useful for finding usability issues early, especially when access to users is limited.
  • Complex flows: Review a multi-step task to identify friction or confusing interactions.
  • Early prototypes: Inspect designs before investing in development or user testing.
  • Accessibility checks: Identify potential usability barriers using established guidelines.
  • Pre-launch review: Catch obvious usability problems before release.

How it's used in practice

  • Define scope and tasks: Choose the user goals and flows to inspect.
  • Use multiple reviewers: Have reviewers work independently before combining findings.
  • Document evidence: Explain the problem, affected task, and principle or guideline involved.
  • Rate severity: Prioritize findings based on their impact on the user experience.
  • Separate findings from preferences: Focus reports on observable usability consequences rather than personal taste.
🪄
Pro-tip: Write findings as predicted user outcomes, such as “Users may miss the Save button because it sits below the fold.” This makes the issue easier to act on.

Challenges & limitations

  • Predicted problems: Experts identify potential issues, so findings may not match what users actually experience.
  • Reviewer dependency: Results vary with the reviewer's UX skill, experience, and knowledge of the product domain.
  • Cannot replace user research: Expert judgment can identify problems, but only real users can show how people actually behave with the product.
