Data-driven or Principles-based UX decisions
It really depends on the constraints and resources you’ve got—there’s always this balance between how quickly you need to move and how much data you have to work with.
Data is super helpful, but it only tells you what happened, not necessarily why it happened. So, you can't always make decisions based on data alone.
For example
Let’s say you notice that the bounce rate on a page is high. Data tells you there’s an issue, but it doesn’t tell you what’s causing it.
That’s where UX principles come in.
They can help you figure out why users might be bouncing and give you a good starting point for fixing it—like maybe simplifying the design, speeding up load times, or improving clarity.
So, data can point you in the right direction, but design principles are what help you understand the bigger picture and make better choices.
In short
We need both: the data to spot problems, and the principles to know how to fix them.
