For context: I’m struggling with how to position myself while applying for jobs. Some companies want me to start as a junior, which doesn’t seem right.
How to position yourself as a career switcher
- Have strong case studies showcasing your product design work.
- Be able to explain how your branding experience translates to UX. Be specific about the skills you bring to the table and how they apply directly to product design.
- Know your UX fundamentals—be prepared to answer technical questions, tackle whiteboard challenges confidently, and give a solid app critique.
The hard truth is, if you’re transitioning, you probably lack specific product design experience. Starting as a junior could be the best option for many people.
But the difference is, you will have a solid foundation to quickly move up to a mid-level role. Just make sure to communicate this clearly with the hiring manager so you're on the same page.
