How to conduct stakeholder interview

Step 1 — Define your research goals.

  • Who is the solution for and why do they need it
  • What are the significant assumptions we need to clarify?
  • What are some concerns or constraints you foresee?

Step 2 — Select & source users

Step 3 — Choose the structure of your interview.

  • Structured interviews have a rigorous set of questions that do not allow one to divert.
  • Semi-structured interviews allow new ideas to be brought up during the interview as a result of what the interviewee says.
  • Unstructured Interviews allow questions to rise spontaneously in a free-flowing conversation.

Step 4 — Create an interview guide

A good interview guide paves the way for a deep, free-flowing conversation with participants.
Outline the main talking points, typically broken down into 4 sections:
  1. Introduction
  1. Warm-up questions
  1. Project-specific questions
  1. Closing remarks

Step 5 — Practice, practice, and practice!
