I’m preparing for a whiteboard interview and feeling a bit lost on how to do so! What should I do?

What interviewer expect from you in this challenge?

Nothing else comes close to demonstrating how a UX designer thinks and behaves than a whiteboard challenge.
From an interviewer’s perspective, it’s:
❌ Not about how many new ideas you come up with ❌ Or how beautiful your drawings are
✅ It is about how you approach a problem and work with others as a designer.

My 4 favourite tips to win whiteboard interview

1. Don’t stop talking!

Think out loud, ask questions, be interactive. Don’t make the common mistake of silently drawing on the whiteboard without interacting with the interviewer.

2. Don’t be defensive!

Listen and iterate based on the feedback, defend your design only when needed. The interviewer is not trying to pick on you.

3. Have a main focus!

Make decisions quickly, focus on one solid, provide as much detail as possible. It is critical to show that you are familiar with common design methods to do day-to-day design work. Don’t have a hundred ideas but end up showing none in details.

4. Follow this process:

Problem → User → Constraints → Solution → Iteration.
