The first round of interviews is typically a phone screen with the recruiter.

The call typically takes between 10-30 minutes and is done by a recruiter or someone from HR.
The main goal of this call is to understand if there is a basic match between you and the hiring company.
They’ll explain the position in more detail and ask about your current employment status, past experience and what you, as the candidate, are currently looking for in the role.

Common questions asked on a phone screen

  • Tell me a bit about your background.
  • What drew you to UX design?
  • How did you find [Company] and [Role]?
  • What do you know about the company? What caught your eye?
  • Tell me about your current/last role.
  • What was a typical day like?
  • What are your reasons for leaving?
  • What are you looking for in your next role?
  • What tools do you use to design?
  • Tell me about a project you worked on from Day 1.
  • How did you get started? Were the requirements clear?
  • What was your role on the project?
  • What was their involvement?
  • What were some of the biggest issues you faced?
  • How did you overcome them?
  • Did the project have a strict deadline?
  • What determines your deadlines?
  • Did the project turn out like you envisioned?
  • Tell me about a project where you got stuck/failed.

To improve your chances of passing this round, focus on researching the company, prepare your answers in advance, and ask questions enthusiastically.
