Networking is cringe?

Yes, we all hate networking.
Yes, we all hate networking.
For UX designers, networking is a crucial skill that goes beyond mere social interaction.
But I used to hate it as a young Designer.
→ Awkward conversations.
→ Feeling like you don’t belong.
→ Pretending to care about things you hate.
As I advanced further in my UX career, I realised networking isn’t just talking to strangers and listening to their corporate talks.
It’s all about building true and long-lasting connections with like-minded people.
Today, I’ll walk you through a powerful guide I use to make networking less awkward and more rewarding for me as a UX Designer.
Let’s dive in 👇

Step 1: Clarify Your Networking Goals

🔶 Setting Purpose-Driven Objectives
Knowing your 'why' provides direction and focus in networking.
This clarity helps you choose relevant events and engage with the right individuals, making your networking efforts more strategic and aligned with your career goals.
In my early career, I wanted to find a UX mentor who had extensive experience in accessibility design. This led me to focus my efforts on events and forums where these experts hang out.
The result? I found a seasoned designer whose guidance was crucial in shaping my approach to inclusive UX.

🎯
Here’s how you can define your networking goals:
  • Think about where you are in your career and how you want to advance.
  • Decide what you want from networking – like finding a mentor or learning new things.

Step 2: Discover Your Ideal UX Community

🔶 Finding the Right Environment for Growth
Immersing yourself in a community of like-minded professionals exposes you to diverse perspectives and emerging trends in UX design.
It’s an opportunity to learn, share, and collaborate, which is crucial for professional development.
I vividly remember joining my first UX community online. It was a game-changer. This experience not only broadened my design perspectives but also introduced me to lifelong colleagues.

🏕️
How to find your UX tribe:
  • Investigate both online and offline UX communities.
  • Leverage social media platforms to connect with UX-ers globally.

Step 3: Master the Art of Engagement

🔶 Building Meaningful but Professional Relationships
Meaningful engagement is the cornerstone of effective networking.
In my journey, I've found that sharing personal challenges opens up more genuine conversations.
By showing genuine interest and participating in thoughtful conversations, you build trust and rapport, essential for long-lasting professional relationships.

🪜
My actionable steps for you are:
  • Prepare open-ended questions that encourage discussion.
  • Develop active listening skills to engage deeply in conversations.
  • Share your experiences and challenges in UX to foster mutual understanding.

Step 4: Narrate Your Unique UX Journey

🔶 Creating a Compelling Personal Brand
A well-told personal story creates a memorable impression and distinguishes you in a competitive field.
Showcase your expertise, creativity, and passion, making you a desirable connection or collaborator.
I'll never forget how sharing my story about transitioning from graphic design to UX opened up so many conversations at a conference.

💬
Here’s how you can tell your stories in networking events:
  • Craft a succinct and engaging personal narrative.
  • Be ready to articulate your passion and vision in UX design.
  • Highlight unique projects, methodologies, or achievements.

Step 5: Cultivate Lasting Connections with UX-ers

🔶 Ensuring Continued Engagement and Growth
Effective follow-up transforms initial contacts into enduring professional relationships.
Personalised communication signifies genuine interest and can lead to mutually beneficial collaborations and opportunities.
After a particularly impactful UX workshop, I made it a point to send personalised follow-up emails.
One of these follow-ups led to a mentorship opportunity with a junior designer, which has been an incredibly rewarding experience for both of us.

🔄
Actionable steps for you to effectively follow-up:
  • Send personalised follow-up messages post-networking events.
  • Refer to specific conversation points to demonstrate attentiveness.
  • Suggest future interactions or collaborations when relevant.

Bonus Step: Leverage Social Media for Networking

🔶 Expanding Your Reach Online
  • Actively engage on platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and design-specific forums.
  • Share your work, insights, and engage with others' content.
  • Join UX design groups and participate in discussions.
Utilising LinkedIn to share my insights and personal experiences working as a UX Designer not only expanded my network but also attracted clients who resonated with my content.
This demonstrated to me the power of social media in turning virtual connections into real-world opportunities.

Final Thoughts

Effective networking in UX is a multifaceted endeavour that requires:
  • Clarity
  • Engagement
  • Follow-ups
  • Strong online presence
By embracing these principles, you can transform networking from an awkward to a rewarding part of your professional journey, opening doors to numerous opportunities and enriching experiences.
As I reflect on my own networking journey in UX, I realise that each connection, conversation, and shared experience has not just enriched my professional life but also brought a sense of community and belonging in UX Design.
