Can ChatGPT be a legit design tool?

If you’re an Internet user, the topic of ChatGPT has probably filled up your mind these days.
Everyone can’t stop buzzing about how transformational this chatbot is!
ChatGPT initially launched in November 2022, but I took my time to test it out on my design process before forming an opinion.
Now as I’ve done my fair share of digging, I must admit:

ChatGPT is one of the most powerful tools you can use to maximise productivity as Designers

This is hands-down the best feature ChatGPT can help UX Designers with: Ask it to generate countless design ideas without getting stuck in the same thought patterns.
If you want to take your brainstorming session to the next level with ChatGPT, you can even ask it to point out possible flaws in your design ideas.

Basic Brainstorming Prompt examples

What are some ways to approach [X]?
What are some unique ways to design [X]?
What are some possible problems of [X]?

Advanced Brainstorming Prompt examples

Reverse Engineering prompt:

Imagine you're redesigning a [X], but with the opposite user experience in mind. How would you change the design to create a completely new and unique experience?

Storytelling prompt:

Create a short story that showcases the journey of a user interacting with [X].
This prompt helps you think about the emotional impact of your design and identify any pain points in the user experience.

Accessibility-First prompt:

Design a website or app that prioritizes accessibility for users with disabilities.
Using a prompt like this will force you to think about design elements and interactions that might not have been familiar to you before.

🔸
Bonus tip Avoid asking open-ended questions that could lead you to multiple irrelevant answers.

Prototyping is usually quite time-consuming. But with ChatGPT, you can speed this whole process up by x2:
  1. Describing your ideas
  1. Watch it create a basic mock-up or prototype
  1. Use this as your starting point and further refine
This is a great way to quickly test out different concepts and see what works best for your users.

Basic Prototyping Prompt examples:

Create a basic wireframe for [X]
Make a low-fidelity prototype for [X]
Generate a working prototype of a website for [X]

Advanced Prototyping Prompt examples:

Storyboard prompt:

Create a storyboard that showcases the user flow through [X].
This prompt can help you visualize the interactions and transitions in your prototype and identify potential issues.

Limited Resources prompt:

Design a prototype with limited resources, such as a restricted color palette or limited design elements based on [X].
This prompt forces ChatGPT to answer more creatively and come up with more innovative solutions for your design.

Micro-Interactions prompt:

Focus on designing a specific micro-interaction in [X], such as a hover effect or a drop-down menu, and make it feel more polished and intuitive.
A prompt like this can help you refine the details of your design and take the design process to another level

🔸
Bonus tip The more detailed information you feed it, The better the answers.

ChatGPT for Feedback

As UX designers, it's essential to have our designs reviewed and evaluated.
ChatGPT can help with this by giving you an instant critique or feedback based on the design prompt you provide.
But be noticed that its answers can be quite messy if your prompt is not detailed enough.
Here are some questions or prompts you can use to get more targeted and relevant feedback

Basic Feedback Prompt examples:

Evaluate the usability of [X]
Review the accessibility for [X]
What are some areas for improvement in [X]?

Advanced Feedback Prompt examples:

Evaluate your design’s emotional impact

Input your design prompt, then ask ChatGPT questions like:
What emotions does the design evoke in the user?
Are the colors, typography, and imagery used in the design consistent with the intended emotional impact?
Are there any areas where the emotional impact could be enhanced, such as through the use of animation or other design elements?

Evaluate your design branding consistency

Input your design prompt, and a detailed description of the brand’s visual identity, then ask ChatGPT:
Are the colors and typography used in the design consistent with the brand's visual identity?
Are there any areas where the design deviates from the brand's established visual style, and if so, is it intentional and appropriate?
Are there any areas where the design could be improved to better align with the brand's visual identity?

🔸
Bonus tip Consider a human Designer’s critiques for ultimate accuracy, ChatGPT’s feedbacks are mere suggestions.

You can ask ChatGPT to predict:
  • User behaviour
  • Analyse the results of user testing.
  • Predict the success of a design solution
This feature helps you make informed decisions based on data and user insights.

Basic Prediction Prompt examples:

What will be the user engagement of [X]?
Predict the success of a new design solution for [X]
Analyse the results of a user testing session for [X]

Advanced Prediction Prompt examples:
