How to choose the right projects for your portfolio
Here’s 3 golden rules I like to use:
1/ Various selection of projects:
🔸 Platform-based variety:
Showcase projects across different platforms (web, mobile apps, VR,… ).
Example: web, mobile, TV, VR… cover a range.
→ This demonstrates your adaptability to various mediums.
🔸 Industry-based variety:
Include projects from different industries (e.g. healthcare, media, blockchain, e-commerce).
Example: healthcare, media, blockchain, e-commerce.
→ This shows your ability to work across different contexts and tackle various challenges.
2/ Your best work
🔸 Projects you’re most proud of:
Think: “what was my best work?”
⤷ The hardest
⤷ The complexities
⤷ The impact of your work
🔸 Projects you most enjoyed:
Think: “when did I have the most fun?”
⤷ Feeling effortless
⤷ Feeling flow state
⤷ Feeling you could do this forever
Emphasise the process behind the project: how you approached challenges, your design thinking, and the impact your work had.
3/ Projects that would align with the type of company you are apply for
🔸 Consumer-facing companies:
Showcase projects focused on user-centered design, usability, and interfaces aimed at broad audiences.
Example: apps where engagement & usage are key.
🔸 B2B companies:
Highlight work involving complex systems, data-driven design, and tools for business users.
Example: an enterprise solution built for sales teams.
4/ Bonus Rule—At Least 3 Projects
🔸 Organise top to bottom:
Think: “let’s force-rank my projects”
⤷ Top: “I want you to read this”
⤷ Middle: “I like this project too”
⤷ Bottom: “Read if you have time”
🔸 Remove, instead of redesign:
Think: “no need for a full overhaul”
⤷ Keep it clear
⤷ Keep it visual
⤷ Keep it focused
Include a minimum of three projects to give a well-rounded view of your skills and experience.
