How to be luckier as a UX designer
I get that feeling too.
There are definitely ways to practice and set yourself up to get more "lucky." Here’s how you can work on each type of luck:
4 levels of luck
Blind Luck:
It occurs by chance, such as winning the lottery, and is beyond one's control.
While you can't control this, you can still put yourself in positions where the chances of something "lucky" happening increase.
For example: enter design competitions, submit your work to online portfolios or exhibitions, and apply to job opportunities that push your boundaries.
The more you put yourself out there, the more likely something unexpected will come your way.
Luck from Motion:
It’s the result of hustle and energy, creating opportunities through action.
These actions could be design regularly, experiment with new tools, and seek out side projects. Volunteer for design work, participate in design challenges, or collaborate with others.
The more action you take, the more opportunities you’ll create—whether it’s learning something new or meeting someone who could open doors for you.
Luck from Awareness:
This comes from having a deep understanding of your craft and industry.
Stay up-to-date with design trends, read about the latest tools and techniques, and understand the business side of design. Network with other designers, attend events, and keep an eye out for the gaps in the market.
With a sharper awareness, you’ll be able to recognize "lucky breaks" when they arise.
Luck from Uniqueness:
The more you embrace your unique design style and skills, the more luck you’ll attract.
Focus on what makes you different from other designers—maybe it’s your problem-solving approach, your use of color, or your ability to design for a niche market.
The more you lean into these unique qualities, the more you’ll stand out, and as a result, you’ll attract clients, collaborators, and projects that are a perfect fit for you.
So, while some luck is out of your hands, a lot of it can be created by your actions, mindset, and how you approach your career. The more you hustle, stay aware, and embrace your uniqueness, the more "lucky" you might feel!
